St George area boasts great yearround attractions!

Area Reservoirs:

There are swimming, boating, water skiing and fishing opportunities at two reservoirs near St. George, Utah.

Gunlock Reservoir is situated among small hills and moderate vegetation. Gunlock State Park on its southern shore has a boat ramp and a primitive campground with vault toilets. The reservoir yields bass and crappie. It is located 21 miles northwest of St. George just south of the town of Gunlock.

Quail Creek Reservoir is a larger and more attractive reservoir situated beneath red rock cliff walls. Quail Creek State Park (along its southwestern shore) offers a paved boat ramp, picnic area, swimming beach and a modern campground. It yields rainbow trout, bass and blue gill. The Sand Hollow Reservoir is now a reality. The reservoir was conceived by the Washington County Water Conservancy District in the early 1990s as an additional storage reservoir for the Quail Creek system. It is located approximately 5.5 miles southwest of Hurricane, Utah almost directly south of Quail Creek Reservoir. The reservoir was created by two dams and will has a surface area of over 1,000 acres. Sand Hollow has truly become the area hot spot for boating, water skiing, cliff jumping and just basking in the area’s amazing summer weather!

Parks and Recreation:

Snow Canyon State Park (10 miles NW) is a small park offering a scenic drive and short hiking and horseback riding opportunities among red sandstone cliffs, twisted rock layers and volcanic flows. It creates a beautiful mixture of colors and a breathtaking backdrop for the area residents.

Pine Valley Mountains (35 miles north) in the Dixie National Forest offers over 60 miles of hiking and horseback trail and several campgrounds in a pretty alpine setting above the summer desert heat. Also within reasonable driving distance from St. George are three superlative national parks.

Zion National Park is 38 miles east, Bryce Canyon National Park is 125 miles northeast and the north rim of the Grand Canyon is 160 miles southeast.

Drama and History:
The attractive and well-maintained Tuacahn Amphitheatre is a 1,900 person capacity theater situated beneath striking 1,500 foot sandstone cliffs. A cast of 80 presents the musical drama UTAH about the early pioneers and settlers of the state. Dinner is available before the show and you can also picnic on the attractive grounds. Admission is $15-25 for adults/ $9-16 for children. Tuacahn is located off Hwy 300 just north of Ivins, Utah at the southern entrance to Snow Canyon State Park.

Silver Reef Ghost Town: Silver Reef was born in 1878 after a surprise sandstone silver strike, and grew into a town of 1,500 by 1881. Subsequent problems with water in the mines and low silver prices killed the town shortly thereafter. The well maintained Wells Fargo Bank Building is the town’s main attraction. It is surrounded by sagebrush and the foundations of other structures long since destroyed. Take I-15 north about 15 miles to Exit 22 or 23 and follow signs west for 1-1/2 miles.
