Area Reservoirs:

There are swimming, boating, water skiing and fishing opportunities at two reservoirs near St. George, Utah.

Gunlock Reservoir is situated among small hills and moderate vegetation. Gunlock State Park on its southern shore has a boat ramp and a primitive campground with vault toilets. The reservoir yields bass and crappie. It is located 21 miles northwest of St. George just south of the town of Gunlock.

Quail Creek Reservoir is a larger and more attractive reservoir situated beneath red rock cliff walls. Quail Creek State Park (along its southwestern shore) offers a paved boat ramp, picnic area, swimming beach and a modern campground. It yields rainbow trout, bass and blue gill. The Sand Hollow Reservoir is now a reality. The reservoir was conceived by the Washington County Water Conservancy District in the early 1990s as an additional storage reservoir for the Quail Creek system. It is located approximately 5.5 miles southwest of Hurricane, Utah almost directly south of Quail Creek Reservoir. The reservoir was created by two dams and will has a surface area of over 1,000 acres. Sand Hollow has truly become the area hot spot for boating, water skiing, cliff jumping and just basking in the area’s amazing summer weather!

Parks and Recreation:

Snow Canyon State Park (10 miles NW) is a small park offering a scenic drive and short hiking and horseback riding opportunities among red sandstone cliffs, twisted rock layers and volcanic flows. It creates a beautiful mixture of colors and a breathtaking backdrop for the area residents.

Pine Valley Mountains (35 miles north) in the Dixie National Forest offers over 60 miles of hiking and horseback trail and several campgrounds in a pretty alpine setting above the summer desert heat. Also within reasonable driving distance from St. George are three superlative national parks.

Zion National Park is 38 miles east, Bryce Canyon National Park is 125 miles northeast and the north rim of the Grand Canyon is 160 miles southeast.

Drama and History:
The attractive and well-maintained Tuacahn Amphitheatre is a 1,900 person capacity theater situated beneath striking 1,500 foot sandstone cliffs. A cast of 80 presents the musical drama UTAH about the early pioneers and settlers of the state. Dinner is available before the show and you can also picnic on the attractive grounds. Admission is $15-25 for adults/ $9-16 for children. Tuacahn is located off Hwy 300 just north of Ivins, Utah at the southern entrance to Snow Canyon State Park.

Silver Reef Ghost Town: Silver Reef was born in 1878 after a surprise sandstone silver strike, and grew into a town of 1,500 by 1881. Subsequent problems with water in the mines and low silver prices killed the town shortly thereafter. The well maintained Wells Fargo Bank Building is the town’s main attraction. It is surrounded by sagebrush and the foundations of other structures long since destroyed. Take I-15 north about 15 miles to Exit 22 or 23 and follow signs west for 1-1/2 miles.

Dixie State College:

In 1911, the first college was founded which comprised of only one building. It was named the St. George Stake Academy but later took on the name, Dixie College. It is a 4 year college with the new name of Dixie State College. Now it is a full service, comprehensive community college that serves over 7,000 students and covers over 100 acres in St. George.

Dixie State College will soon become a part of the University of Utah, talk has turned into decision and will come in 2009. Dixie State’s ability to offer an excellent academic setting in a warm climate with many social experiences makes Dixie State College the number one choice of Utah community colleges. Small classes, personalized education, affordable cost and warm sunshine makes Dixie unique.

Why Choose Dixie?

Recent statistical surveys indicate that students have attended and graduated from Dixie for the following reasons: Warm Weather, Fun Recreational Activities, Personalized Education, Excellent Academic Assistance, Easy Transfer of Credits, Top Ranked Athletic Programs, Beautiful Scenery!

Washington County School District:

Today Washington County School District provides public education for more than 19,000 students. There are 19 elementary schools, 2 intermediate schools, 4 middle schools and 6 high schools with a seventh to open in the 2008-09 school year. A number of specialty programs are available through the public school system including remedial and gifted programs, health services and an in-school lunch program for elementary students.

Education has always been important to the people of Washington County. Even before homes were built, schools were held in wagon boxes and temporary shelters. The first school was built in Virgin in 1860. Three others soon followed. In 1901, a central school was completed offering two years of high school.

Although settlers came to Washington County as early as 1852, St. George was settled in 1861. Mormon leader Brigham Young sent a group of pioneers to the far reaching corner of the Territory of Utah to grow cotton and wine grapes and harvest silk for export to the Civil War-torn northern states. Today the cotton fields are gone, the wineries are closed and the silk industry has given way to modern, more prosperous businesses.

St. George, the county’s largest city, lies along interstate 15 with a host of smaller communities that make up Utah’s Dixie. The advantages of the county’s position along one of the nation’s key east-west routes between California and places such as Salt Lake City, Denver and Albuquerque is making Washington County one of the nation’s fastest growing communities. The scenic area not only provides easy access to major markets of the western United States, it has become a destination point for all.

The St. George - Zion National Park areas of Washington County were rated among the best communities in the country to retire by Rand McNalley, Prentice Hall, Money and the American Association of Retired People. As a result there was a large amount of construction of new homes in the Washington County area.
The unprecedented growth experienced in the county has not been limited to retirees, however. Young working families joined the migration to Utah’s Dixie to establish one of the most stable and reliable work forces in the nation. They came for the climate, the scenic beauty, the family atmosphere and explosive job opportunities. Much of the growth is due to the area’s competitive construction rates and low crime.

St. George Temple is a beautiful building towering impressively above the rest of St. George. Completed in 1877, its stands as the oldest active Mormon Temple in the world. Non-Mormon visitors are not allowed inside, but may walk its attractive grounds and admire its architecture. The St. George Temple is truly a landmark for this wonderful city. The winter home of Brigham Young sits on a pretty tree-lined street near the center of town. It is an attractive home with a nice yard and white picket fence. It is open for public tours 9 a.m. to sunset.
